Ayurveda is one of the world’s oldest medical sciences. Ayurveda is over 3,000 years old and originating in India, and is still commonly practiced in India, Sri Lanka, and Nepal. In Ayurveda food, stress level, and even your own temperament play enormous roles in overall health, and food and fresh herbs, hydration, rest, yogic breathing techniques, affirmations, and physical activity are often the treatment.
Ayurveda combines two words Sanskrit: ayur (life) and veda (science): the science of life. Bringing the various parts of your life together consciously is fundamental to Ayurveda, it is show in concepts like:
1) Universal Connectedness: how the self, other beings, and the universe all relate to one another.
2) Dosha: The qualities of the elements that influence a body, such as Water, or Ojas (hydration), Breath, or Prana (oxygenated blood and aerobics), and Fire, or Tejas (temperature, metabolic rate).
3) Prakriti: Your unique natural state. How the doshas combine in a particular person (or time and place) to show you a blueprint to your own health and happiness.
Balance is the natural state of the human body.Unfortunately, the stresses in everyday life easily throw us out of balance. Most people are predisposed to one or two doshas, and it is important to keep a balanced disposition and to align your current Dosha with your Prakriti (natural state).
Creating and maintaining health through Ayurveda is accomplished through maintaining a healthful diet and crafting an intentional lifestyle. All forms of life function through routine, sometimes measured by daylight hours and sometimes by seasons. Our modern jobs and food systems make nurturing healthy routines difficult. Waking and sleeping hours, meal times and environment, enjoyable exercise, bathing, breathing and meditation are all aspects of a healthful Ayurvedic routine.
